Back to Bolsa Chica

Today I led a group from Pasadena Audubon around Bolsa Chica. There were lots of south-bound shorebirds including the two above adult Western Sandpipers. Notice the feathers in various states of wear. These birds have some feathers that are nearly a year old. They’ve flown from the wintering grounds nearby all the way to the Arctic to breed and have returned. Most of the migrant shorebirds at Bolsa Chica today have done the same.

A Common Tern was probably the unusual bird highlight for the day. Long-billed Curlew below.
